TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication Related Handicapped Children) is an evidenced based program for individuals with Autism. The main focus of TEACCH is on the design of the physical and visual environment. The classrooms are structured to accommodate the difficulties or behaviors an individual with Autism may encounter while teaching them to behave in appropriate and acceptable ways.TEACCH believes that structure for children with Autism provides a strong framework for learning, so the physical layout, pictured schedules and pictured work systems are very important. In addition, TEACCH uses the PEP (Psycho Educational Profile) to identify where the individual falls behind and also areas where skills are emerging. From this assessment, an education program is made for this student.

Some of the main components of TEACCH are related to structure, such as:

“For people with autism, the best predictor of quality of life is employment, and for children with autism, the best predictor for future employment is attaining independent living skills.” Those words of Dr. Laura Klinger, Executive Director of the TEACCH Autism Program at The University of North Carolina (UNC), guided my recent return to train.

  1. Structured Teaching--The TEACCH Method. Structured teaching via the TEACCH method was developed by Professor Eric Schopler and many of his colleagues at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The TEACCH method is not considered an actual therapy but rather a therapeutic tool to help autistic individuals.
  2. Evidence-Based research on TEACCH: Comparative efficacy of LEAP, TEACCH and non-model-specific special education programs for preschoolers with autism spectrum disorders. Journal of autism and developmental disorders. 1 This study compares three programs for children with ASD under age five.
  1. Physical Organization- This is the physical layout of the room.It should be designed to provide students with visual information and to direct their activities in a predictable manner.
  2. Scheduling- Visual schedules let the students know what will happen next and in what sequence. This will assist them in predicting events and lessen their anxiety.
  3. Work Systems- These tell the students what activities must be completed by visually specifying what and how much work must be done and when the session is complete.

The other components are:

  • Assessment for individualized treatment- Unique education programs are designed for all students based on the assessment of their abilities.
  • Parent collaboration- Parents work as co-therapists so that techniques can be used at home.

As any program or approach, TEACCH has both pros and cons to its approach when teaching children with Autism.

The pros of TEACCH are the great structure it provides its students within the classroom.TEACCH also really looks at each individual through assessment to make a program that best fits that individual student. Also, TEACCH works closely with parents, so parents feel very supported with this approach.

As stated above, there are both pros and cons to every approach and program. The TEACCH approach has many strengths, but it also has a few cons.First, there is no hard evidence to document that children are improving or that TEACCH is an effective approach to teaching children with Autism.Secondly, TEACCH does not specifically focus on social and communication skills as fully as other approaches, which is a major deficit for children with Autism.Lastly, the classrooms are so structured, what happens when children have to deal with a situation, like daily life, that is not as structure.

1.Set up classroom for specific work areas (individual and groups). Minimize visual and auditory distractions.

2.Set up a specific schedule and routines to be followed everyday

3.Create visual work schedules for the students to follow while working through their workbaskets (make sure to do one for each group activity as well).

4.Create workbaskets (a complete self contained work task that can be completed individually by the student)

5.Teach instructional aides how to use schedules.

6.Teach students how to use schedules and staff uses them consistently throughout the school year.

The TEACCH model may be used in any setting. Teachers use it for one on one, group and mainstream instructions. Any environment where visual supports and PECS can be used is also a place TEACCH may be used.
